Greatest Album Art

Music Album Art has as much history attached to it as the albums themselves. In some cases the album art has become iconic not just to the album, but to the band itself. Here are a few of my favourites in no particular order

The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967)

The cover art was by Andy Warhol and remains one of the most recognizable album covers in rock history. Andy Warhol was also one of the producers and the album was recorded during his 1966 'Exploding Plastic Inevitable' tour.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (1973)

Probably the most instantly recognisable album cover of all time, Dark Side of the Moon's refracting prism is said to represent the group's striking sound & light effects during their live shows. Apparently the band took less than three minutes to decide on the now-famous image, declaring it, simply, “appropriate”.

Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy (1973)

According to Wikipedia, "The cover art for Houses of the Holy was inspired by the ending of Arthur C. Clarke's novel Childhood's End. (The ending involves several hundred million naked children, only slightly and physically resembling the human race in basic forms). It is a collage of several photographs which were taken at the Giant's Causeway, Ireland, by Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis.

The two children who modelled for the cover were siblings. The photoshoot was a frustrating affair over the course ten days. Shooting was done first thing in the morning and at sunset in order to capture the light at dawn and dusk, but the desired effect was never achieved due to constant rain and clouds. The photos of the two children were taken in black and white and were multi-printed to create the effect of 11 nubiles that can be seen on the album cover. The results of the shoot were less than satisfactory, but some accidental tinting effects in post-production created an unexpectedly magical album cover."

Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland (1968)

There is an interesting story behind the album cover. Hendrix's had written a letter his label Reprise describing exactly what he wanted for the cover. He wanted a colour photo by Linda Eastman from his group sitting with children on a sculpture from Alice In Wonderland in Central Park NY. However his letter was ignored and the company's art department produced this cover featuring naked women lounging in front of a black background - Thank God for that :-)

Toto - Turn Back (1981)

This minimalistic design has always been one of my favourites, though I can’t say much the same about the music

Pink Floyd - A Collection of Great Dance Songs (1981)

Of course Floyd never made music for the dance floor. Hence the album title is almost an oxymoron. The cover which featured a photograph of ballroom dancers tied to the ground very much like Gulliver so they cannot move. One of my all time favorites.

Iron Maiden - Brave New World (2000)

Iron Maiden's iconic mascot Eddie has takes centrestage on every album cover. However "Brave New World' is by far my favourite. The album art and title song are references to the 1932 novel of the same name written by Aldous Huxley, which anticipates developments in reproductive technology, biological engineering, and sleep-learning that combine to change society. What was fantasy 70 years ago is fact today !!

Police - Ghost in the Machine (1981)

This one is an eternal favourite as well. The cover art features an LED-inspired graphic that actually depicts the heads of the three band members each with a distinctive hair style (from left to right, Andy Summers, Sting with spiky hair, and Stewart Copeland with a fringe !! Apparently, the band had spent weeks trying to decide a photograph for the album cover and the finally consented on this one !!

The World's Most Pointless Song

Back in college, we used to love this song. Without this no party was complete... you just had to dance to this one. Now that I think of it, I can't figure it why it was a hit !! This song has the world's most pointless lyrics (short of 'Telephone dhun me hasne waali' from Hindustani)

If you don't believe me, read the damn lyrics.... specially the Hindi translation next to the original English lyrics and you'll get my point ;-)

---

Oh my God, we're back again (Oh mere bhagwan hum wapas aaye)

Brothers, sisters, everybody sing (Bhaiyon Behenon sab milke ga-ao)
Gonna bring the flavor, show you how (Main swaad le ke aaoonga aur tumhe dikhaoonga)
Gotta question for you better answer now, yeah (Tumhare liye ek sawaal hai, tum jawab dena samje, haan !)

Am I original? (Kya mai asli hoon?)
Yeah (Haan)
Am I the only one? (Kya mai ek hi hoon?)
Yeah (Haan)
Am I sexual? (Kya mai maadak roop se aakarshak hoon?)
Yeah (Haan)
Am I everything you need? You better rock your body now (Kya Mai vahi hoon jo tumhe chahiye, apna shareer hilao)

Everybody (Saare logon)
Yeah (Haan)
Rock your body (Apna Shareer Hilao)
Yeah (Haan)
Everybody (Saare logon)
Rock your body right (Apna Shareer Hilao)
Backstreet's back, alright (Pichlee gali vaapis aayee hai, theek hai)

Now throw your hands up in the air (Ab apne haath hawa mein phenko)
Wave them around like you just don't care (Aise hilao jaise parvaah nahi hai)
If you wanna party let me hear you yell (agar tum party karna chahte ho to mujhe tum shor machate sunayi dene chaiye)
Cuz we got it goin' on again (Kyonki hum yahan fir se chaloo ho gaye hain)
Yeah (Haan)

Am I original? (Kya mai asli hoon?)
Yeah (Haan)
Am I the only one? (Kya mai ek hi hoon?)
Yeah (Haan)
Am I sexual? (Kya mai maadak roop se aakarshak hoon?)
Yeah (Haan)
Am I everything you need? You better rock your body now (Kya Mai vahi hoon jo tumhe chahiye, apna shareer hilao)

Everybody (Saare logon)
Yeah (Haan)
Rock your body (Apna Shareer Hilao)
Yeah (Haan)
Everybody (Saare logon)
Rock your body right (Apna Shareer Hilao)
Backstreet's back, alright (Pichlee gali vaapis aayee hai, theek hai)

So everybody, everywhere (To saare logon, sab jagah)
Don't be afraid, don't have no fear (Mat daro, na fikar karo)
I'm gonna tell the world, make you understand (Main duniya ko bataoonga aur tumhe samjhaoonga)
As long as there'll be music, we'll be comin' back again (Jab tak sangeet hai, hum vaapis aate rahenge)

Everybody (Saare logon)
Yeah (Haan)
Rock your body (Apna Shareer Hilao)
Yeah (Haan)
Everybody (Saare logon)
Rock your body right (Apna Shareer Hilao)
Backstreet's back, alright (Pichlee gali vaapis aayee hai, theek hai)

The bravery of being out of range

There aren't many more songs better than this one - an absolute classic. So true of our leaders, our politicians - the men in charge of our countries !!

Roger Waters at his best

Sing along

You have a natural tendency
To squeeze off a shot
You're good fun at parties
You wear the right masks
You're old but you still
Like a laugh in the locker room
You can't abide change
You're at home on the range
You opened your suitcase
Behind the old workings
To show off the magnum
You deafened the canyon
A comfort a friend
Only upstaged in the end
By the Uzi machine gun
Does the recoil remind you
Remind you of sex
Old man what the hell you gonna kill next
Old timer who you gonna kill next
I looked over Jordan and what did I see
Saw a U.S. Marine in a pile of debris
I swam in your pools
And lay under your palm trees
I looked in the eyes of the Indian
Who lay on the Federal Building steps
And through the range finder over the hill
I saw the front line boys popping their pills
Sick of the mess they find
On their desert stage
And the bravery of being out of range
Yeah the question is vexed
Old man what the hell you gonna kill next
Old timer who you gonna kill next
Hey bartender over here
Two more shots
And two more beers
Sir turn up the TV sound
The war has started on the ground
Just love those laser guided bombs
They're really great
For righting wrongs
You hit the target
And win the game
From bars 3,000 miles away
3,000 miles away
We play the game
With the bravery of being out of range
We zap and maim
With the bravery of being out of range
We strafe the train
With the bravery of being out of range
We gain terrain
With the bravery of being out of range
With the bravery of being out of range
We play the game
With the bravery of being out of range
